About this award

This is a firm fixed-price delivery order awarded by the Johnson Space Center to The Regents of the University of Colorado, doing business as the University of Colorado Office of Contracts and Grants Division, for ISS National Lab mission integration and operation services. The proposed experiment plans to develop a new cancer drug conjugate and characterize its efficacy and metabolism in a microgravity environment on the International Space Station. The $368,400 contract has a performance period ending on December 31, 2017. The University of Colorado is an accredited public research university with expertise in conducting fundamental research across science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines for federal agencies like NASA, the Department of Defense, and NOAA. This award was not set aside for any specific business type.

Description

ISS national lab (ONCOLINX) mission integration and operation services. The proposed flight experiment plans to develop a new azonafide derivative that generates highly potent and highly selective cytotoxic conjugates upon coupling to antibodies that bind to receptors exclusively expressed on cancer cells. These conjugates will be characterized in a microgravity environment on the ISS. The efficacy and metabolism of the drug will be determined in a low shear microgravity environment that allows cells to grow in a 3-dimensional, spheroid structure which more closely resembles how cancer cells grow in the body. This investigation could potentially accelerate the development of targeted therapies that redefine the paradigm of cancer treatment. The cancer cell line plus a positive and negative control will be frozen and flown to the ISS via cold stowage assets.
