"CRITICAL FUNCTIONS" THE NATIONAL CENTER FOR EDUCATION STATISTICS (NCES) IS CHARGED WITH THE ACQUISITION, ANALYSIS, INTERPRETATION, DISSEMINATION, AND REPORTING OF STATISTICAL DATA REFLECTING THE CONDITION AND PROGRESS OF EDUCATION AT ALL LEVELS IN THE UNITED STATES AND ON EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES AND STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT COMPARED WITH FOREIGN NATIONS. ITS POSTSECONDARY, ADULT, AND CAREER EDUCATION (PACE) DIVISION FOCUSES ON FORMAL AND INFORMAL EDUCATION BEYOND HIGH SCHOOL, AND THROUGH A SERIES OF RESEARCH PROGRAMS COLLECTS DATA FROM INSTITUTIONS, STUDENTS, AND ADMINISTRATIVE DATA SYSTEMS. DATA RELEASED BY NCES ARE EXTENSIVELY USED IN FEDERAL POLICY ANALYSES AND SUPPORT SIGNIFICANT RESEARCH EFFORTS IN GOVERNMENT, ACADEME, AND ADVOCACY GROUPS.
