Description

Justification: CT deep is working towards the development of a statewide tmdl addressing nutrient loading and HAB formation with watershed specific appendices to address site-specific conditions. CT deep has successfully used this tmdl format (a core document with watershed-specific appendices) previously to address recreational and shell fishing impairments due to bacteria as well as to address aquatic life impacts from storm water. Addressing nutrient impairment and habs is a priority for EPA. Funding CT's tmdl will allow the state to address all the lake and impoundment nutrient-impaired waters listings is a greatly expedited manner. This funding is needed to evaluate nutrient loading and estimate watershed based annual load reductions for bantam lake. Bantam lake will be the first appendix that will accompany the statewide nutrient tmdl. The funding will be used to perform modeling of the lake using the bathtub model and train CT deep staff to use the model to complete the remainder of the state's nutrient-impaired lakes and impoundments. There is significant federal interest in ensuring that the nutrient-impaired water bodies listed on the CT impaired waters list are addressed by tmdls in the most expeditious time period possible. This state-wide tmdl will serve as a model nationally for an efficient approach to addressing nutrient impairments for lakes and impoundments.
