About Women In Safe Homes

Women In Safe Homes (WISH) is a grassroots organization based in Ketchikan, Alaska dedicated to promoting zero tolerance for violent crimes and advocating for victim rights in Ketchikan and rural communities of Southeast Alaska. With over 40 years of experience, WISH provides 24-hour crisis intervention and emergency safe housing for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, dating violence, and stalking.

Through federal grant funding, Women In Safe Homes has implemented a range of projects aimed at supporting victims and preventing violence. They have received funding from the Department of Justice Office on Violence Against Women for programs such as the Rural Domestic Violence, Dating Violence, Sexual Assault, and Stalking Assistance Program to provide victim services like hiring sexual assault advocates, forensic interview training, sexual assault nurse examiner training, and establishing response teams across rural Alaskan communities. The Legal Assistance for Victims program provided civil and criminal legal aid for victims. Other DOJ grants funded transitional housing, school-based violence prevention, child advocacy services, and victim services integration. Women In Safe Homes has partnered with law enforcement, healthcare providers, and government entities on these initiatives. Funding from HUD supported shelter improvements, while the Denali Commission grant paid for domestic violence shelter infrastructure upgrades. Women In Safe Homes has also received Administration for Children and Families grants for family violence prevention activities and cooperative agreements to enhance services for child and youth victims under the Family Violence Prevention and Services Act.
