About Prince Georges County Public Schools
Prince Georges County Public Schools (PGCPS) is one of the nation's largest school districts, serving over 130,000 students across 208 schools and centers in Maryland. As the second largest school system in the state, PGCPS provides comprehensive educational services to a diverse student population from urban, suburban, and rural communities near Washington, DC. Through federal grant awards, PGCPS receives funding to support a wide range of educational programs and services, including general instruction, special education, English language learning, school nutrition, career/technical education, teacher training, technology integration, and various academic initiatives. The district has a particular focus on addressing the needs of disadvantaged students and improving academic outcomes.
As both a prime recipient and sub-recipient of federal grants, PGCPS has implemented numerous federally-funded programs. Major initiatives have included expanding mental health services and suicide prevention programs in secondary schools through Department of Health and Human Services funding. The district has also received substantial Impact Aid from the Department of Education to support the education of students residing on federal properties. As a sub-recipient, PGCPS has partnered with the Maryland State Department of Education to administer various Elementary and Secondary Education Act programs, such as Title I (support for disadvantaged students), Title II (teacher quality), Title III (English language acquisition), and Title IV (student support). Additional sub-awards have supported special education services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, career and technical education through Perkins grants, and homeless student programs. During the COVID-19 pandemic, PGCPS also received significant emergency relief funding to address challenges related to remote learning, learning loss, and school reopening.
