About the company

Hmong American Farmers Association (HAFA) is a non-profit organization founded in 2011 to support Hmong American farming families through cooperative efforts, capacity building, and advocacy. Through federal grants, HAFA provides outreach, education, and technical assistance to historically underserved farmers and ranchers, with a focus on assisting Hmong American farmers in owning and operating successful farms.

HAFA has received over $1.7 million in federal prime grant awards from the National Institute of Food and Agriculture, Rural Business Cooperative Service, and Rural Housing Service to provide a range of services supporting Hmong American farmers. This includes delivering culturally and linguistically tailored training programs on business operations, financial management, food safety compliance, cooperative development, and sustainable growing practices. HAFA also facilitates access to land, equipment, markets, capital, and USDA programs for its members. Additionally, HAFA aims to build relationships between underserved farmers and USDA staff and support the development of local farmer cooperatives and networks. Through a 2019 subaward, HAFA collaborated with the University of Minnesota and other partners on research advancing sustainable spotted-wing drosophila management techniques for strawberries.
