About the company
Association Of State And Territorial Solid Waste Management Officials, Inc., doing business as ASTSWMO, is a nonprofit environmental trade association representing waste management and remediation programs within the 50 U.S. states, five territories, and the District of Columbia. Registered to receive federal awards since 2003, ASTSWMO provides critical support to state and territorial environmental programs through research, training, and technical assistance. The organization focuses on enhancing effective state and territorial programs and influencing national policies related to waste and materials management, environmentally sustainable practices, and environmental restoration. ASTSWMO's work primarily involves cooperation with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to improve state-federal partnerships and program implementation in areas such as Superfund, brownfields, underground storage tanks, and solid waste management.
Through federal grant awards, ASTSWMO conducts a wide range of activities to support state environmental programs. These include researching priority issues related to brownfields, Superfund sites, and underground storage tank management; developing tools and resources to share research results; providing technical training for state staff; and facilitating dialogue between states and the EPA to address implementation challenges. Specific projects involve incorporating emerging science into cleanup activities, evaluating climate adaptation issues, disseminating information on EPA guidance and initiatives, supporting institutional controls and operation and maintenance activities, and identifying best practices in state programs. ASTSWMO also works on improving data sharing, promoting innovation in cleanup enforcement, and addressing contaminants of emerging concern. The organization receives funding through various EPA programs, including the Office of Land and Emergency Management, covering areas such as Brownfields Training, Research, and Technical Assistance (CFDA 66.814) and other RCRA and CERCLA-related initiatives. These cooperative agreements and project grants, typically spanning 5-year periods, enable ASTSWMO to serve as a crucial intermediary between state environmental agencies and federal regulators, fostering more effective and coordinated environmental management across the United States.
