About this program

The National Institutes of Health (NIDA – National Institute on Drug Abuse) funds basic, clinical, translational, and implementation research on substance use, drug addiction, drug overdose prevention, diagnosis, and treatment under Assistance Listing 93.DA4, with scientific review periods ranging from 180 days for AIDS applications to 240–270 days for other submissions.

The program supports research aimed at developing new knowledge and approaches to prevent, diagnose, and treat drug use, misuse, and addiction, and related health outcomes including HIV/AIDS. Funding covers the full spectrum from basic science through clinical translation to implementation-ready interventions. NIDA awards grants directly to applicant institutions after the National Advisory Council on Drug Abuse concurs with Scientific Review Group recommendations and approves funding for payment.

Selection criteria include scientific and technical merit, research feasibility, potential contribution to addressing the national drug use problem, and alignment with NIDA priorities. Renewals are determined at the individual NOFO level; eligible organizations are also specified by NOFO. Non-federal recipients are subject to standard NIH audit requirements under 2 CFR Part 200 Subpart F, with records retained for at least three years (extended if audit findings remain unresolved).

The source does not report recent grant awards, award frequency, funding volumes, typical award magnitudes, or current open grant opportunities. The program description does not specify assistance-type mix or funding concentration patterns. No information is available on the most recent funding activity or active solicitations.
