About this program

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) awards Cooperative Agreements under CFDA 93.832 to strengthen the cancer surveillance workforce, improve data quality in the National Program of Cancer Registries, and promote the use of cancer surveillance data; a recent opportunity (CDC-RFA-DP-27-0076) was posted on September 28, 2026, with no stated due date.

This program funds workforce development, credentialing, and professional education for cancer registrars and Oncology Data Specialists; technical assistance and guidance to cancer registry programs; and communication strategies to increase awareness and use of cancer surveillance data among researchers and public health decision-makers. The work supports compliance with the Cancer Registries Amendment Act, which mandates complete, timely, and accurate reporting of all malignancies and benign central nervous system tumors. The CDC has emphasized modernization toward real-time reporting in recent years.

Award activity has been sparse. The portfolio contains a single recorded award from September 2016—a $1.6 million Cooperative Agreement (NU58DP006264) with a performance period through August 2021. No additional awards have been recorded since. The CDC is the sole funding agency. All awards under this program are Cooperative Agreements, which means the CDC provides technical assistance, coordination with NPCR registries, and progress monitoring alongside funding.

Grant periods of performance run one to five years. After initial funding, projects may continue non-competitively if the recipient demonstrates satisfactory progress and continued funding is deemed in the federal government's interest. Records must be retained for three years from award closeout or until final audit resolution.

The recently posted opportunity (CDC-RFA-DP-27-0076) explicitly welcomes applicants from a broad range of entity types: state and local governments, tribal governments, 501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3) nonprofits, higher education institutions, small businesses, and for-profit organizations. The source does not specify a due date for the current solicitation. A prior opportunity posted July 16, 2020 (CDC-RFA-DP21-2104) had a due date of March 30, 2021; review the current Grants.gov posting for timeline details and specific award ceiling information.
