About this program

The Department of Health and Human Services Immediate Office of the Secretary funded 62 Cooperative Agreements totaling $705.8 million under the Health Information Technology Regional Extension Centers Program (CFDA 93.718), with the most recent award issued on September 27, 2010. This program is no longer active; no grant opportunities are currently open and no new awards have been issued since 2010.

The program funded regional extension centers that provided technical assistance to primary care providers adopting and meaningfully using electronic health records (EHRs). Representative awards included the Ohio Health Information Partnership Regional Extension Center ($29.9 million), the New Jersey Health Information Technology Extension Center ($23.9 million), and the New York City Regional Extension Center ($22.8 million). The program supported a range of regional implementations: the Chicago HIT Regional Extension Center targeted 1,653 priority primary care providers; the Minnesota and North Dakota Regional Extension Assistance Center (REACH) aimed to assist 5,100 priority providers; the Arkansas HIT Regional Extension Center targeted 1,280 providers to achieve meaningful use of certified EHR technology; and the South Florida Health Information Technology Regional Extension Center served Miami-Dade, Broward, and Monroe counties with support from over 1,700 providers.

All 62 awards were structured as Cooperative Agreements, with individual award values ranging from approximately $4.3 million to $29.9 million. Most awards were issued in February and April 2010, with the final tranche awarded in September 2010. The program required a 90/10 matching requirement across the four-year project period. Award completion dates ranged from February 2014 to June 2016, indicating this was a time-limited initiative authorized under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The statute limited support to regional centers for a period not exceeding four years, and that authorization window has long expired.
