About this program
The National Institutes of Health Office of Dietary Supplements (CFDA 93.321) funds research and knowledge translation activities related to dietary supplements and natural products, with multiple grant opportunities currently open as of March 2024 and earlier opportunities closed through September 2023.
The program funds pre-clinical, clinical, behavioral, and epidemiological research on dietary supplements and natural products, including characterization of botanical ingredients, validation of analytical methods for supplement constituents, translational research advancing natural products toward clinical trials, and computational approaches to analyze chemical and biological data from natural products. The Office of Dietary Supplements also supports research building capacity for future dietary supplement research and training programs strengthening the field's workforce.
The program's active opportunities reflect a portfolio mix dominated by Project Grants with a smaller share of Cooperative Agreements. Recent solicitations posted in March 2024 include three major components of the Consortium Advancing Research on Botanicals and Other Natural Products (CARBON) Program: RFA-AT-24-007 (Limited Competition for a nuclear magnetic resonance research resource for natural product data, due July 8, 2024); RFA-OD-24-014 (Botanical Dietary Supplements Translational Research Teams using multi-PD/PI collaborative teams to advance botanical products toward clinical trials, due July 8, 2024); and RFA-AT-24-008 (computational tools to aggregate and analyze natural product data using artificial intelligence and machine learning, due June 28, 2024). Earlier administrative supplement opportunities (PA-20-227 and PA-20-252) supported dietary supplement research and validation studies of analytical methods, though those closed in April 2023 and April 2022, respectively.
Award eligibility is broad: domestic public and private nonprofits, for-profit organizations, institutions of higher education, hospitals, laboratories, state and local governments, and federally recognized tribal entities all qualify. Some initiatives accept applications from foreign organizations. Awards are made for at least one year and are subject to three-year record retention requirements. Administrative supplements are non-renewable; other programs may be renewable depending on the specific funding opportunity announcement. Grantees must comply with competitive peer review for scientific merit and program relevance, except administrative supplements, which are reviewed by NIH scientific staff.
