About this program

The Department of Health and Human Services Health Resources and Services Administration administers the Public Health Training Centers Program (CFDA 93.249), which funds regional centers at schools of public health to train and develop the current and future public health workforce through field placements, collaborative projects, and training programs tailored to medically underserved populations including elderly, immigrants, refugees, and disadvantaged communities. The most recent grant award was disbursed on July 1, 2018.

Program activity has been sporadic. The portfolio spans 72 awards since 1997, with significant variation in award cadence: 29 awards in 2003, 8 in 2005, 1 in 2010, 3 in 2011, and 10 in 2018. No grant awards have been disbursed in the eight years since July 2018. Award recipients must designate a geographic service area geographically removed from the teaching facility's main location, assess local public health personnel needs, establish or strengthen field placements in public or nonprofit organizations, and involve faculty and students in collaborative projects serving medically underserved communities.

The program is predominantly Project Grants (89 percent, 64 awards) with a smaller Block Grant component (11 percent, 8 awards). Combined federal dollars obligated total $133 million across all awards. The Department of Health and Human Services Health Resources and Services Administration Bureau of Health Professionals dominated recent funding, obligating $112 million across 10 awards, while the parent HRSA organization obligated $21 million across 62 awards. Recent large awards from July 2018 included Project Grants of $20.01 million (UB631689), $13.89 million (UB631684), and $13.47 million (UB631687), all with ultimate completion dates of September 29, 2026. Earlier cohorts from 2000–2003 and 2010–2011 typically ranged from $300 thousand to $2.06 million per award. No recent grant opportunities appear to be currently open in the source material.
