About this program
The Department of Education Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services administers CFDA 84.380, which funds Special Olympics expansion activities and the design and implementation of Special Olympics education programs including character education and volunteer programs that integrate into classroom instruction, with the most recent award made September 1, 2026.
The program operates as a single annual grant to Special Olympics, the sole eligible recipient. Award cadence has been consistent at one award per year across the past five fiscal years, with 19 total awards since program inception in 2008. The most recent award, issued September 1, 2026, obligated $38 million for the period through August 31, 2027. Combined federal dollars obligated across the portfolio total $334.9 million. Award values have grown steadily: recent awards in 2024, 2025, and 2026 ranged from $36 million to $38 million annually, compared to $20.1 million in 2020 and $15.1 million in 2018.
All awards in the portfolio are Project Grants. The Department of Education Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services funds 18 awards totaling $322.3 million; the Department of Education proper funds one award of $12.6 million.
The program's authorized scope encompasses activities that increase participation of individuals with intellectual disabilities within the United States through Special Olympics expansion, and education programs supporting the purposes of the Special Olympics Sport and Empowerment Act of 2004. Recipients must maintain records related to grant funds, compliance, and performance in accordance with 2 CFR 200.333. The program is subject to annual appropriations availability.
No grant opportunity is currently posted. Given the program's structure as a sole-recipient, noncompetitive award to Special Olympics with consistent annual disbursements, this program is not a pursuit vehicle for organizations outside Special Olympics itself.
