About this program
The Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration awarded $2.2 million under Assistance Listing 81.281 (Workforce Opportunities in Regional Careers II) on August 12, 2025, as a five-year Project Grant to expand the nuclear workforce talent pipeline in Georgia and South Carolina surrounding the Savannah River Site.
WORC II remains actively funded, with one award disbursed in 2025. The program supports workforce development in nuclear science and related technical fields through four components: fiscal management and program administration; college and university pipeline development including apprenticeship programs, success coaching, scholarships, and recruitment support across five regional academic partners; K-12 pipeline development through career camps and STEM skill programs in partnership with regional education centers; and equipment and supplies for academic programs aligned with NNSA mission needs. The program targets public and private nonprofit institutions in the two-state region.
All recent funding activity flows through the Department of Energy National Nuclear Security Administration, which represents 100 percent of awards. The program exclusively awards Project Grants. Combined federal dollars obligated total $2.2 million, with the single recent award at that magnitude representing the baseline current award size. Recipients must maintain auditable records for all grant costs. Approval decisions rest with a Headquarters program official within the Office of Research, Development, Test, and Evaluation (NA-11).
Eligible applicants are public and private nonprofit institutions demonstrating alignment with NNSA workforce development objectives and a track record supporting skilled workforce programs in the SRS region. The 2025 award to an unspecified recipient established a five-year funding period concluding August 11, 2030. No current grant opportunities are listed as open.
