Collaborative Research
The National Endowment for the Humanities seeks applicants for its Collaborative Research program to support groups of two or more scholars advancing humanistic knowledge through manuscript preparation for print publication, creation of scholarly digital projects, or planning of international collaborations, with applications due September 16, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time. This year's competition is limited to projects on American history and culture or Western civilization. Eligible applicants include 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations, accredited public and private institutions of higher education, state and local government agencies and their subordinate units, and federally recognized Native American Tribal governments. No cost share is required unless federal matching funds are requested. Approximately $2,500,000 will be distributed among an estimated 15 grants across three categories. Planning International Collaboration awards provide up to $50,000 for six to twelve months of performance. Manuscript Preparation and Scholarly Digital Project awards provide up to $250,000 each for one to three years of performance, with up to $100,000 per year for years one and two and up to $50,000 for year three. Projects must commence between November 1, 2027, and August 1, 2028. Each application must designate one sole project director who is a scholar not enrolled in a degree-granting program and may include multiple codirectors. No individual may serve as project director or codirector on more than one application per competition. Peer reviewers evaluate applications on significance, methods and execution, collaboration quality, work plan clarity, and outcomes and access plans. Funding restrictions prohibit costs for equipment purchases, conference attendance, print publishing and press subventions, diversity and inclusion initiatives, political or religious advocacy, and training. Award announcements are anticipated in July 2027. The Assistance Listing number is 45.035.
