About this program
The National Endowment for the Arts awarded grants supporting arts projects, arts education, research, and arts-health initiatives through CFDA 45.024 as recently as January 2027, with activity concentrated in performance and educational programming across dance, theater, music, and visual arts disciplines.
The program funds project-based arts activities in Arts Education, Challenge America, Dance, Design & Our Town, Folk & Traditional Arts, Literary Arts, Local Arts Agencies, Museums, Music, Opera, Presenting & Multidisciplinary Works, Research, Theater & Musical Theater, and Visual & Media Arts. Recent awards span touring theater productions, music education and training programs, arts engagement activities for K-12 students and underserved populations, community design initiatives, and collaborative arts-health programming. One award obligated $5 million to support creative arts therapies and arts engagement across Department of Defense and Veterans Affairs clinical sites; most other recent awards ranged from $10,000 to $85,000. Representative recent grants include $70,000 to support the National Folk Festival in Jackson, Mississippi; $65,000 for a world premiere theatrical production as part of America250 commemoration; and $60,000 for dance tours and engagement activities partnering with historically Black colleges and universities.
The portfolio consists almost entirely of Project Grants (52,484 of 52,716 awards), with a negligible share of Cooperative Agreements. The National Endowment for the Arts is the sole funder. Combined federal dollars obligated total $1.77 billion across the program's history; non-federal matching and cost-share contributions added $7.53 billion, bringing combined total obligations to $9.3 billion.
Award activity has declined sharply in 2026–2027. Annual awards numbered 2,774 in 2023, 2,467 in 2024, 1,435 in 2025, and 729 in 2026, with only 5 awards recorded in 2027 so far. Recent grant opportunities remain open under multiple funding tracks. Grants for Arts Projects (GAP) 2, FY 2027 (CFDA 2026NEA01GAP2) is due July 9, 2026 and requires a 1:1 cost share; it supports project-based funding across arts disciplines for nonprofit organizations, state and local governments, and tribal communities. NEA Research Grants in the Arts, FY 2027 (2026NEA01ORAGRANTS) was due March 23, 2026 and funds research studying the value and impact of the arts. Cooperative Agreement opportunities exist for selected initiatives: the NEA National Heritage Fellowships Awards Program (NEAPS2601, due August 7, 2026) seeks an organization to coordinate awards, showcases, and events for master artists in jazz and folk traditions.
