About this program

The US Geological Survey (USGS) under the Department of the Interior funds education, outreach, workforce development, and collaborative research activities that advance remote sensing and Earth observation technologies and applications, CFDA 15.815, with the most recent grant award on September 15, 2023.

The program supports a national consortium model that develops specialized tools and resources for educators, facilitates conferences and workshops, promotes remote sensing education across all learning levels, and fosters collaboration between academic institutions, governmental entities, and the public. Recent funding has concentrated on AmericaView, a network of stateview partners operating in 41 states, with deliverables including improved adoption of remote sensing products, increased pipeline of students with employment skills in remote sensing science, and expanded geographic reach of the stateview network. The program's scope encompasses education and outreach to K-13 and higher education, workforce development, technology transfer, and applied research addressing environmental monitoring, land use and land cover change, natural resource management, agricultural applications, disaster risk reduction, and public health–related remote sensing applications.

The program is sparsely active: four awards have been disbursed since 2011 (one each in 2011, 2013, 2018, and 2023), with no discernible recent cadence. Combined federal dollars obligated total $17.6 million across all awards. Award magnitudes range from $1.9 million to $6.3 million, with the most recent award to AmericaView at $4.4 million obligated through September 2028. The assistance-type mix is predominantly Project Grants (75 percent) with one Block Grant (25 percent). The USGS Office of Acquisitions and Grants accounts for three of four awards and $15.7 million federal dollars obligated.

The program accepts applications from domestic nonprofits, public and private educational institutions, and state, local, and tribal governments. Foreign applicants, for-profit organizations, and individuals are ineligible. A notice of funding opportunity was posted on May 17, 2023 (G23AS00381, due July 19, 2023), soliciting applications to develop or maintain a nationwide consortium to expand remote sensing science through education, outreach, and research. No current open solicitation is evident in the source.

Objective and description

Objective

To promote the uses of space-based land remote sensing data and technologies through education and outreach at the State and local level and through university based and collaborative research projects. Technologies of interest include multispectral

Description

This listing conducts nationwide remote sensing, Earth observation, and Geospatial (RS/EO/GS) information gathering activities. Information gathering activities occur at all levels (local, regional, and national), in all relevant industry and commercial areas, and within the academic and research spaces. These activities provide user stories about specific RS/EO/GS use cases, novel applications and approaches, educational needs, and a continuing assessment of how value-added products and applications are supporting a wide variety of user communities.

Eligibility
