About this program
The U.S. Geological Survey Earthquake Hazards Program (CFDA 15.807) funds earthquake hazards research and monitoring to develop information, knowledge, and methods addressing assessment and characterization of earthquake hazards, monitoring and reporting of earthquake activity and crustal deformation, research into earthquake causes and effects, and earthquake safety information for loss reduction. Most recent grant awards were issued in September 2025, and the program remains actively funded with approximately 55 to 60 awards issued annually over the past five years. Combined federal dollars obligated across the portfolio total $312.2 million since the program's inception in 2000.
The program funds predominantly Project Grants (90 percent of awards) with a smaller share of Cooperative Agreements (10 percent). The Department of the Interior U.S. Geological Survey dominates as the sole significant funder, with the USGS accounting for 1,484 awards totaling $179.6 million in federal dollars, and the USGS Office of Acquisitions and Grants handling 561 awards for $132.5 million. Representative recent awards show concrete scope: AI-driven landslide forecasting models for post-earthquake rapid response (September 2025, $79,420); seismic monitoring of induced earthquakes in the Haynesville Shale play across Louisiana and East Texas (September 2025, $43,166); paleoseismic investigation of the Shively Fault in northern California to assess seismic hazards (September 2025, $59,854); and elevated coastal uplift investigation in southern Cascadia to understand megathrust and crustal fault slip rates (September 2025, $97,376). Typical individual award magnitudes range from under $100,000 to mid-six figures, with recent awards clustering between $40,000 and $220,000.
A Notice of Funding Opportunity soliciting proposals for FY2027 (G27AS00240) was posted April 29, 2026, with an application due date of June 4, 2026. The USGS estimates $4 million total award funding with a potential maximum of $7 million, expecting to fund 50 to 70 new competitive research grants. The majority of grants historically range between $30,000 and $120,000, with no absolute maximum amount if justified appropriately. Eligible applicants include public and private colleges and universities, non-profit and for-profit organizations, state and local governments, and unaffiliated scientists. Grant approval timelines range from 5 to 9 months after application submission.

- Description
Earthquake Hazards Program Assistance supports earthquake hazards research and monitoring in order to develop information, knowledge, and methods relevant to the major Earthquake Hazards Program elements: Assessment and Characterization of Earthquake Hazards; Monitoring and Reporting Earthquake Activity and Crustal Deformation; Conducting Research into Earthquake Causes and Effects; and Earthquake and Safety Information for Loss Reduction. Specific objectives and research tasks identified as measures of progress towards the goals of these program elements are described in greater detail in Notice of Funding Opportunity announcements posted to Grants.gov.
Eligibility
- Applicant eligibility
Public and private colleges and universities; Non-profit, non-academic organizations; For-profit organizations; State and Local Governments; and unaffiliated scientists.
- Beneficiary eligibility
Research scientists, engineers, and the general public will ultimately benefit from the program.
- Uses of assistance
Specific research and monitoring objectives are identified in Program Announcements posted to Grants.gov.
- Length and time phasing of assistance
Program obligates funds and sends a notice of award to successful applicants. Recipients request funds in accordance with 2 CFR 200, Subpart E-Cost Principles, unless otherwise dictated by program-specific legislation or special award terms. Program will include any special payment terms and conditions in the notice of award.
How to apply
- Criteria for selecting proposals
Panels composed of expert scientists and engineers drawn from government, universities, and private industry evaluate all grant applications. Criteria for judging applications includes: relevance and timeliness of the proposed research to the goals of the program; technical quality of the proposal; competence of the principal investigator and recipient organization; and appropriateness and reasonableness of the budget.
- Award procedure
Notification of an award is by receipt of a grant or cooperative agreement from a U.S. Geological Survey contracting officer through FedConnect (https://www.fedconnect.net/FedConnect/).
- Time to approval or disapproval
Due dates for assistance applications are stated in Grants.gov postings. The range of approval is 5 to 9 months.
- Renewals
A renewal proposal competes with all other proposals and must be developed fully as though the proposer is applying for the first time.
