About this program
The Department of the Interior Fish and Wildlife Service is managing the Gorilla, Chimpanzee and Bonobo Conservation Fund (CFDA 15.629) to support habitat protection, population monitoring, and anti-poaching efforts for great apes in Africa and Asia, with the most recent award distributed on October 1, 2023.
The program has awarded 500 grants totaling $48.1 million in federal dollars since 2001, though award volume has declined sharply in recent years: from 42 awards in 2018 to just 3 in 2023. Recipients contribute an additional $52.9 million in non-federal matching funds, bringing total obligated dollars to $101 million. The portfolio is dominated by Project Grants (90 percent, 450 awards) with smaller shares of Block Grants (9 percent) and Cooperative Agreements (1 percent). Two Fish and Wildlife Service entities fund the program: the primary Fish and Wildlife Service office with 375 awards ($25.9 million federal) and Region 9 Headquarters with 125 awards ($22.2 million federal).
Funded projects focus on community-based forest protection, ranger patrol training, habitat restoration, wildlife monitoring using camera traps and acoustic sensors, disease surveillance in ape populations, human-ape conflict mitigation, alternative livelihood development, and reintroduction of rescued or rehabilitated orangutans and gibbons. Representative recent grants include a cooperative agreement to operate a centralized great ape population database and develop conservation effectiveness tools ($358 thousand, October 2023); forest and peatland management in target landscapes to reduce deforestation and protect ape populations ($773 thousand, March 2023); and community patrol training to protect Sumatran orangutans around research stations in Indonesia ($688 thousand, January 2023). Other awards address disease ecology affecting mountain gorillas and chimpanzees in Uganda, habitat connectivity for West African chimpanzees in Guinea's national parks, and orangutan conservation in oil palm-dominated landscapes.
A recent grant opportunity (F25AS00376, posted December 5, 2024, due January 24, 2025) seeks a three-year Cooperative Agreement to strengthen the capacity of Central African wildlife veterinarians and veterinary colleges to address great ape health threats, though this solicitation is currently suspended. An earlier opportunity (F23AS00467, posted August 2023, due October 4, 2023) offered up to $4.5 million across three awards for cross-river gorilla and chimpanzee conservation in Nigeria-Cameroon and Grauer's gorilla and eastern chimpanzee protection in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
