Description

Generate critical information on the ecology and biology of a bacterium responsible for an emerging and possibly zoonotic disease (epizootic neurologic and gastroenteric syndrome, engs) killing critically endangered chimpanzees at a sanctuary in sierra leone, and to assess the threat to wild apes by: (1) conducting ecological studies to determine the source of infection, explain seasonal patterns of mortality, and identify critical management-related interventions for stopping the spread of the disease; (2) determining how widespread the bacterium and syndrome are in equatorial african sanctuaries and in the wild; and (3) determining optimal growth conditions for the bacterium in the laboratory to facilitate future investigations of treatments and preventions.
