About this program
The DOD Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences has awarded 1,534 grants totaling $4.34 billion in federal obligations as of October 1, 2026, under CFDA 12.750 for military medical research, clinical studies, and health professional education and training.
The program funds a broad portfolio of military health priorities: infectious disease detection and surveillance; trauma and combat casualty care (including burn treatment, hemorrhage control, and surgical robotics); traumatic brain injury diagnosis and management; pain management and stress resilience; warfighter performance optimization; radiation injury countermeasures; vaccine development for military-relevant pathogens; musculoskeletal injury rehabilitation; and behavioral health training. Recent awards also support health systems analysis, TRICARE reimbursement evaluation, wastewater-based biosurveillance for force health protection, and assessment of medical systems in combat zones. Competitive awards span both fundamental research and translational development, with performance periods typically one to five years.
The funding mix is predominantly Cooperative Agreements at 62 percent of awards (944 awards), Project Grants at 37 percent (562 awards), and Block Grants at 2 percent (28 awards). The Uniformed Services University serves as the sole funding agency for this portfolio. Recent award magnitudes range from under $30 thousand for narrow surveillance or validation studies to multi-million-dollar efforts; representative recent awards include $25.86 million for a Brain Injury and Disease Prevention, Treatment, and Research Core (September 2025), $13.27 million for 3D human microtissue models for cancer and infectious disease preparedness (September 2026), and $9.09 million for clinical decision support tools in surgical critical care (March 2026).
Award volume has declined modestly in the past two years—67 awards in 2025 and 59 awards through early October 2026, compared to 129–132 awards annually in 2023–2024. The most recent grant award date was October 1, 2026, demonstrating current program activity.
No current grant opportunities are open. The most recently posted solicitation was the Global Health Engagement Research Initiative (GHERI) white-paper call (HU000124CGHE0001) posted February 20, 2024 with a March 21, 2024 due date, now closed. The Wounded Warrior Service Dog Program, which has appeared in past funding cycles with $10–14 million budgets directed to nonprofit service dog training organizations, does not have a posted FY2026 or FY2027 opportunity visible in the source material.
