About this program

The Department of Commerce National Telecommunications and Information Administration is distributing $5.15 billion across 283 Project Grants under the Tribal Broadband Connectivity Program (CFDA 11.029), with the most recent award issued August 1, 2026, and an open solicitation due November 17, 2026.

The program funds broadband infrastructure deployment, broadband service subsidies and affordability programs, digital literacy and workforce training, and telehealth and remote-learning support serving tribal governments, tribal colleges and universities, Native Hawaiian communities, tribal organizations, and Alaska Native corporations. Recent awards span fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) network construction, fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) deployment, fixed wireless access (FWA) infrastructure, satellite broadband provisioning, shovel-ready network design studies, equipment upgrades, broadband service prepayment for households, digital navigator positions, and community anchor institution connectivity projects.

The program is funded entirely by the Department of Commerce National Telecommunications and Information Administration; all 283 awards are Project Grants. Award activity peaked in 2022 with 130 grants, declined sharply to three grants in 2024, then rebounded to 47 grants in 2025 and seven in 2026. The portfolio reaches back to December 2021. Federal dollars obligated total $5.15 billion, with combined federal and non-federal share at $5.24 billion, indicating minimal recipient cost-share overall.

Recent awards range from $496 thousand for network design and workforce development in five Alaska tribal communities to $363.5 million for Hawaiian homestead fiber, fixed wireless, and digital innovation center deployment. Large infrastructure awards include $185.2 million for Choctaw Nation fiber across four counties, $164.8 million for Muscogee (Creek) Nation broadband across four Oklahoma counties, $91.3 million for Fort Belknap fiber and wireless, and $74.5 million for pueblo fiber and fixed wireless in New Mexico. Mid-range adoption and affordability grants typically range from $1 million to $40 million; smaller design and planning awards range from $496 thousand to $2.5 million.

The current open solicitation (2026-NTIA-TBCP, posted June 17, 2026) solicits applications for remaining TBCP funds, with application due November 17, 2026. The funding opportunity description notes a close-date update from September 17 to November 17, 2026. Eligible applicants include tribal governments, tribal colleges and universities, the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands on behalf of Native Hawaiian communities, tribal organizations, and Alaska Native corporations.
