About this program

The Department of Agriculture Forest Service administers the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act Prescribed Fire/Fire Recovery program (CFDA 10.716), which funds controlled burns, fuels reduction, burned-area rehabilitation, and post-fire recovery on national forests and grasslands through Cooperative Agreements. The most recent grant award was disbursed on August 13, 2026.

The program funds prescribed burning under carefully managed conditions to restore fire-dependent ecosystems, reduce hazardous fuels, improve wildlife habitat, and increase landscape resilience. Recent awards also support post-fire recovery activities including noxious weed treatment in burned areas, fenceline reconstruction, stream channel restoration, timber harvesting and thinning to remove insect- and disease-infected trees, and habitat improvement for sensitive species. The program coordinates resources across Forest Service regions under the Wildfire Crisis Strategy and the National Prescribed Fire Resource Mobilization Strategy.

All 35 awards in the portfolio are structured as Cooperative Agreements. Awards are dispersed across Forest Service regions, with the Rocky Mountain Region (R2) leading by both award count (10 awards) and federal dollars obligated ($10.4 million). The Southwestern Region (R3) ranks second by federal dollars ($6.2 million across 6 awards), followed by the Pacific Northwest Region (R6) at $3.9 million across 5 awards. The Southern Region (R8) and Alaska Region (R10) round out the top funders.

Combined federal dollars obligated total $25.9 million, with non-federal cost-sharing adding $5 million for a combined total of $30.9 million. Award magnitudes range from under $40 thousand to over $7 million, with typical mid-range awards in the $300 thousand to $2 million range. A 2023 agreement with the San Juan National Forest for vegetation management and fuels reduction across approximately 11,482 acres received $7.25 million. A 2024 award for Prince of Wales Island wildlife and riparian habitat improvement received $2.1 million. A 2026 agreement for hazardous fuel reduction and herbicide application across 889 acres received $2.3 million.

Award activity has been volatile, peaking at 17 awards in 2023, then declining to 8 in 2024 and 1 in 2025 before recovering to 4 awards in 2026 as of August. No recent grant opportunities are present in the source material. The program operates under Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act funding authorized through fiscal year 2026.

Objective and description

Objective

The Prescribed Fire/Fire Recovery program of the Forest Service aims to restore health to ecosystems that depend on fire. This is achieved through the controlled application of fire by a team of fire experts under specified weather conditions. The pr

Description

The Forest Service's Prescribed Fire/Fire Recovery program uses carefully planned, professionally managed fires to help restore the health of forests and other ecosystems that naturally depend on fire. Under safe weather conditions, trained fire experts apply controlled burns to reduce hazardous fuels, improve wildlife habitat, and strengthen the resilience of landscapes at high risk for severe wildfires. The program supports prescribed burning on priority areas identified through the Wildfire Crisis Strategy and coordinates resources across regions as part of the National Prescribed Fire Resource Mobilization Strategy. Through these efforts, the program helps protect communities, maintain healthy ecosystems, and reduce the likelihood of destructive wildfires. The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) passed Congress and was recently signed by the President committing federal appropriations for Wildland Fire Management activities; including fuels management activities, prescribed fire and related activities, burned area rehabilitation, and post fire recovery; in fiscal years 2022 through 2026
