About this program
The Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) funds food safety education, training, research, and awareness initiatives supporting USDA nutrition assistance programs under Assistance Listing 10.585, with the most recent grant award disbursed September 30, 2024.
The program is currently inactive for new applications. The source explicitly states "Program no longer accepting applications" and "There are presently no open requests for applications." However, the program has sustained activity through recent years: four awards were disbursed in 2024, three in 2023, three in 2021, two in 2020, and one in 2022, for an average of approximately three awards annually over the past five years. The funding history extends to 2009.
Awards have supported child nutrition professionals' food science literacy through cooperative agreements such as the Behind the Tray program, which develops week-long in-person science-based food safety training; noncompetitive food safety education cooperative agreements with the Institute of Child Nutrition; and a noncompetitive grant to FAIR Health investigating pediatric foodborne illness and allergy medical data. The program also funded a Center for Food Safety in Child Nutrition Programs conducting research and disseminating findings across FNS nutrition assistance programs including the National School Lunch Program, School Breakfast Program, Child and Adult Care Food Program, and Summer Food Service Program.
Eligible applicants are publicly funded universities and colleges operating under state or regional government auspices and private institutions of higher education, plus 501(c)(3) nonprofits in some solicitations. The FNS has also awarded noncompetitive grants to specified organizations where funding allows.
The program is predominantly structured as Cooperative Agreements (67 percent, 20 awards) with a smaller share of Project Grants (33 percent, 10 awards). FNS provided all $12.5 million in combined federal dollars obligated across 30 recent awards. Representative award magnitudes range from $62,500 to $975,000, with recent examples including a Washington state cooperative agreement for $570,660 (September 2024), a Mississippi cooperative agreement for $575,000 (September 2024), and a Texas cooperative agreement for $599,998 (September 2023).
The most recent posted opportunities closed in mid-2024: the FY24 Behind the Tray solicitation (posted May 13, 2024; due July 12, 2024) sought cooperative agreements from public and private higher education institutions; earlier opportunities in 2023 and 2020 solicited evaluations of the Produce Safety University course and continuation of the Center for Food Safety research, respectively. No current open solicitations are listed.
