This $2.4 million project grant from the US Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture's Bioproduct Pilot Program (CFDA #10.236) supports the development of a modular bioprocessing system to produce bioplastics from food waste. Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University will lead a consortium including Quasar Energy Group LLC, University of Missouri System, and Iowa State University to establish a 100-liter scale pilot facility. Over three years, the team will optimize independent process components to cost-competitively convert a variety of food wastes into naturally occurring biodegradable polyesters for bioplastic production. The modular design aims to accommodate high variability in food waste properties. Successful completion of the pilot project will deliver marketable bioplastic products and demonstrate the technical and economic viability of a circular solution diverting food waste from landfills to offset petroleum-based plastic pollution.

Soylei Innovations, LLC (SLI) received a $4,606,850 Project Grant award from the U.S. Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture under the Bioproduct Pilot Program (CFDA 10.236) to advance the development and scaling of three bioproducts for use in asphalt construction derived from poly(acrylated epoxidized high oleic soybean oil) (PAEHOSO). SLI will scale production of the PAEHOSO-based chain transfer agent, surfactant, and polymer compounding required to produce the emulsions and modify asphalt. Collaborators will supply feedstocks and develop production capacity for PAEHOSO and finished emulsions. SLI, Iowa State University, the National Center for Asphalt Technology, and other stakeholders will optimize product formulations, conduct technical and economic analyses, and demonstrate the bioproducts in pilot construction and maintenance projects to evaluate their cost-competitiveness and environmental benefits compared to incumbent products.

This Project Grant award from the Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture will support development of bioproducts from food and agricultural wastes through the Bioproduct Pilot Program (CFDA 10.236). The University of Illinois will receive $2,530,926 to operate a one ton per day continuous plug-flow hydrothermal liquefaction pilot reactor system. This system will process food waste and swine manure to produce biocrude and post-HTL wastewater. The biocrude will then be separated into a biobinder for road pavement applications and a light fraction for transportation fuel use. The wastewater will be treated to recover nutrients in fertilizer form. The aim is to advance the technical, economic and environmental benefits of converting wastes into cost-competitive bioproduct substitutes for incumbent materials, in line with the goals of the Bioproduct Pilot Program.
