Project Grant 20237900038974
- This $2.4 million project grant from the US Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture's Bioproduct Pilot Program (CFDA #10.236) supports the development of a modular bioprocessing system to produce bioplastics from food waste. Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University will lead a consortium including Quasar Energy Group LLC, University of Missouri System, and Iowa State University to establish a 100-liter scale pilot facility. Over three years, the team...
- The University of Illinois received a $650,000 Project Grant award from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program. The goal of this 3-year project is to lower the carbon intensity (CI) of corn-based ethanol production by replacing at least 40% of the natural gas used with a renewable fuel gas generated from ethanol production byproducts. The project aims to achieve an 18% reduction in...
- This $866,598 federal Project Grant award, funded under the United States Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) CFDA 10.310 program, supports research to develop cost-effective and environmentally friendly pathways to upgrade lignocellulosic biomass into a bioplastic precursor (3-hydroxypropionic acid) and biopolymers. The key objectives of this 4-year project, led by Kansas State University, are to: (1) identify integrated biomass pretreatment...
- This $800,000 Project Grant awarded by the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program, will develop a robust and scalable processing platform for converting food waste into high surface area carbon materials for use in supercapacitors. The project will apply a hydrothermal carbonization method to capture the organic carbon from food waste, and then thermochemically activate the resulting hydrochar to produce high...
- This Project Grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) CFDA Program No. 10.310 will evaluate the use of biochar derived from waste timber in asphalt concrete mixes. The $300,000 award will assess the performance, economic viability, and environmental benefits of replacing fine aggregate in asphalt with biochar, with the goal of lowering the greenhouse gas footprint and...
- Northern Illinois University received a $648,581 Project Grant award from the United States Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) federal grant program. The grant will fund research into the technical and economic feasibility of pipeline hydro-transport of agricultural and forest residue biomass as an alternative to truck transportation. Key activities include experimental studies using a laboratory-scale...
- The Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Auburn University $300,000 under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative competitive grants program (CFDA 10.310) from January 2023 to January 2025. The project aims to demonstrate the feasibility of producing optically pure (R)-1,3-butanediol from paper mill sludge through metabolic engineering of a microbial host. Specifically, the university will construct a synthetic pathway to produce...
- This $300,000 Project Grant awarded by the USDA's Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (CFDA 10.310) aims to demonstrate the feasibility of producing chirally pure (R)-3-hydroxybutyrate (R-3HB) from plant waste materials, such as wood and crop leftovers, by modifying Clostridium pathways. The research will create and test two different R-3HB production pathways in Clostridium, then combine and further optimize the approaches to boost R-3HB yields in the bacterium. If successful, this work...
- This $10,000,000 Project Grant award was provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program. The goal is to develop a universal feedstock supply (UNIFY) chain logistics system to transform harvest, post-harvest, and preprocessing methods for six major U.S. crops - corn, soybean, cotton, hemp, camelina, and switchgrass. The project will design, optimize, and demonstrate a pilot...
- This $294,000 Project Grant award from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) CFDA 10.310 program will develop and test a new modular system to convert livestock manure into useful products like fertilizer and clean water. The project aims to address the environmental and public health challenges posed by improper manure management on farms, particularly in rural areas. The system will...
This Project Grant award from the Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture will support development of bioproducts from food and agricultural wastes through the Bioproduct Pilot Program (CFDA 10.236). The University of Illinois will receive $2,530,926 to operate a one ton per day continuous plug-flow hydrothermal liquefaction pilot reactor system. This system will process food waste and swine manure to produce biocrude and post-HTL wastewater. The biocrude will then be separated into a biobinder for road pavement applications and a light fraction for transportation fuel use. The wastewater will be treated to recover nutrients in fertilizer form. The aim is to advance the technical, economic and environmental benefits of converting wastes into cost-competitive bioproduct substitutes for incumbent materials, in line with the goals of the Bioproduct Pilot Program.
