About this program
The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture funds applied agricultural and natural resource research at federally designated Tribal Colleges under the 1994 Institutions Research Grants program (CFDA 10.227), with the most recent award made on April 1, 2026.
The program funds fundamental and applied research projects addressing priorities of tribal nations and their communities, with explicit focus on building research capacity at the 35 eligible Tribal Colleges. Recent awards reflect concrete research activities: microplastics in agricultural systems relevant to tribal lands, pinyon pine genomics and drought resilience on the Navajo Nation, quantum-based food-safety sensors at Navajo Technical University, harmful cyanotoxin effects on aquatic insects at Northwest Indian College, walleye aquaculture fatty-acid optimization, and soil health research via cover crops on tribal reservations. Projects commonly integrate traditional ecological knowledge with contemporary science methods and emphasize student training alongside research outcomes. Conference grants supporting multi-institutional research networks have also been funded, as have projects on food sovereignty, climate resilience, and rangeland management.
The program is exclusively funded by NIFA, which obligated $46.9 million in federal dollars across 285 awards since 2000. The portfolio is 100 percent Project Grants. Award volume has averaged 6–9 grants per year over the past five years (2022–2026), with 3 awards in the first four months of 2026 and a most recent award in early April. Individual recent awards range from $149 thousand to $750 thousand, with the majority clustering in the $300–650 thousand range. A December 2025 award for quantum sensor development and a February 2026 award on microplastics research each received $150 thousand.
Two grant opportunities remain open. USDA-NIFA-TCRGP-011697, posted April 22, 2026, is due December 31, 2026, and encourages projects in innovative agricultural technologies including artificial intelligence, data science, and robotics, with particular interest in undergraduate training in digital tools for food and agriculture. USDA-NIFA-TCRGP-011215, posted January 13, 2025, is due December 31, 2025, and requires collaboration with 1862 or 1890 Land-Grant Institutions, USDA ARS, a Non-Land-Grant College of Agriculture, or a forestry school under the McIntire-Stennis program. Project periods do not exceed three years, with no-cost extensions allowed up to five years total.

Second, a peer-review process will be used to evaluate the scientific and technical merit of applications that have meet the administrative requirements.
