About this program
The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture is awarding Project Grants predominantly under Assistance Listing 10.226 to enhance agricultural curricula in secondary and two-year postsecondary schools, increase educator competencies, and develop joint initiatives among K-12 institutions, community colleges, and universities to build a workforce pipeline in food, agriculture, natural resources, and human sciences, with the most recent award issued September 15, 2025.
The program has maintained steady activity over 25 years: 451 total awards distributed since 2001, with an average of eight awards annually over the past five years (range: 4 to 12 per year). Combined federal dollars obligated total $26.8 million, with a non-federal match of $5.4 million across recipients. Funded activities span curriculum development in emerging agricultural technologies (virtual reality forestry modules, drone applications, artificial intelligence in plant growth), hands-on laboratory experiences in food science and fermentation, dual-enrollment college credit pathways for high school students, teacher professional development and externships, internship and apprenticeship placement programs, and support for K-12 agricultural literacy initiatives. Recipients include public secondary schools, community colleges, universities, nonprofit organizations, and extension services. Recent awards exemplify the scope: Front Range Community College received $30,866 to support 90 students in fermentation sciences laboratory training over four years; Middle Tennessee State University received $44,000 to develop a dual-enrollment food literacy course with college credit; and universities in Colorado, Puerto Rico, and Arkansas each received $150,000 for multi-year projects combining mentorship, field experiences, and career pathways in sustainable agriculture and human sciences.
Funding concentration resides entirely within NIFA: 365 awards funded $13.9 million, 84 awards funded $12.2 million, and 2 awards funded $742 thousand—all within the same federal agency. Project Grants comprise 450 of 451 awards (99.8%); a single Cooperative Agreement to the National Agriculture in the Classroom Organization held a $2.4 million allocation supporting statewide program capacity building and K-12 agricultural literacy nationwide. Award magnitudes typically cluster in the $30,000–$50,000 and $150,000 ranges; the most recent portfolio included three awards at $150,000, two at $44,000, one at $30,866, and one at $0 obligated (obligated amount pending).
A notice of funding opportunity posted July 8, 2026 (USDA-NIFA-CSPECA-32938) with a due date of July 27, 2026 solicits project proposals addressing the six statutory purposes: enhancing agricultural curricula, building faculty teaching competencies, fostering student interest in higher education in food and agriculture sciences, promoting agriscience and agribusiness integration into science and business curricula, facilitating joint initiatives among secondary schools and postsecondary institutions to maximize facilities and equipment, and supporting Agriculture in the Classroom programs for grades K–12. Eligible applicants remain public secondary schools, public or private nonprofit junior and community colleges, institutions of higher education, and nonprofit organizations with IRS 501(c)(3) status; school boards are ineligible. Project periods do not exceed five years. Applications must proceed through a two-stage review: administrative screening followed by scientific peer review.

How to apply
- Preapplication coordination
All NOFOs are published on the NIFA website and Grants.gov. Applicants must complete the SAM.gov and Grants.gov registration process prior to applying. See the program NOFO for any program specific pre-application requirements.
- Criteria for selecting proposals
NIFA evaluates each application in a two-part process. First, we screen each application to ensure that it meets the administrative requirements set forth in this NOFO. All administrative requirements must be met for the application to proceed to the next level of review. Second, a scientific peer-review process will be used to technically evaluate applications that have met the administrative requirements using a review panel (see NIFA Peer Review Process). NIFA selects reviewers for the review panel based upon their training and experience in relevant scientific, extension, or education fields. After each peer review panel has completed its deliberations, the responsible program staff of NIFA will recommend that your project is either approved for support from currently available funds or declined due to insufficient funds or unfavorable review.
- Award procedure
Within the limit of funds authorized, the NIFA awarding official will make grants to eligible applicants whose applications are judged most meritorious under the procedures set forth in this NOFO. After the award is finalized, a formal notification in the form of a Notice of Award (NoA), signed by the Authorized Departmental Officer, will be provided to the applicant organization for successful applications. The NoA is the authorizing document and will be sent via email to the recipient's Authorized Representative and it provides pertinent instructions and information about the award. The NoA will provide pertinent instructions and information including, at a minimum, the information described in 2 CFR 200.211 (see NIFA's Terms and Conditions).
