About this program

The Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) administers the Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE) program under Assistance Listing 10.215, with the most recent grant awards issued September 30, 2025. The program funds research, education, and professional development projects designed to increase agricultural productivity while maintaining soil and water quality, conserving natural resources, and improving farm profitability and rural quality of life. SARE operates through four regional host institutions and a National Reporting, Coordinating, and Communications Office (NRCCO) rather than direct project grants to individual applicants.

Grant awards have been consistently disbursed over the past five years at a steady cadence of approximately five awards per year. The program has awarded 133 grants totaling $511.2 million in combined federal dollars since 2007. NIFA dominates all funding under this listing, providing the entirety of the $511.2 million obligated. The assistance-type mix is predominantly Cooperative Agreements (117 awards, 88 percent), with a smaller share of Project Grants (16 awards, 12 percent). Recent awards cluster around $10.8 million for regional host institution cooperatives and approximately $1.7 million to $1.8 million for the NRCCO. Representative recent awards include Cooperative Agreement 20253864045389 for $10.8 million to coordinate SARE in the Southern Region (13 states and 2 territories) through September 2030, including approximately 13 research and education projects, 20 graduate student projects, 10 on-farm research projects, and 13 farmer-led projects; Western SARE's Cooperative Agreement 20253864045392 for $10.8 million to fund comparable programs across the Western Region through September 2030; and the NRCCO's Cooperative Agreement 20253864045393 for $1.7 million to develop and distribute communications resources, maintain IT platforms, and coordinate cross-regional impact tracking through September 2030.

Eligible applicants include land-grant colleges and universities, other universities, State agricultural experiment stations, State cooperative extension services, nonprofit organizations with demonstrable expertise, and Federal or State governmental entities. Project periods do not exceed five years. Grant opportunities have been posted on Grants.gov; the most recent solicitation on file is from September 2022 (USDA-NIFA-OP-009382), with an application due date of November 14, 2022. Annual NOFOs are published on Grants.gov; prospective applicants should contact the National Program Leader at NIFA to confirm current solicitation timelines and deadlines.
