About this program

The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) funds agricultural research and extension capacity-building at 1890 Land-Grant Institutions and Tuskegee University through CFDA 10.205, with the most recent awards disbursed October 1, 2025.

The program supports Evans-Allen capacity research addressing food security, agricultural productivity, natural resource stewardship, human nutrition and health, and community resilience. Funded institutions conduct applied research spanning soil and water quality management, crop and livestock production systems, food safety and processing, specialty crop development, aquaculture, pest management, climate adaptation, precision agriculture, genomic improvement, and extension outreach tailored to small-scale, limited-resource, and minority farmers. Representative recent awards include Kentucky State University ($11.2 million) for agricultural technology solutions supporting small and limited-resource farms; North Carolina A&T ($12.7 million) for food safety, nutrition research, and precision agriculture across multiple on-campus and regional facilities; and Prairie View A&M University ($17.8 million) for natural resource stewardship, food security research, and sustainable livestock management in Texas communities.

The program is predominantly Formula Grants (95 percent of 1,040 awards), with a smaller share of Project Grants (5 percent, 58 awards). Combined federal and non-federal obligated dollars total $2.47 billion across 1,098 awards spanning 2000 to October 2025. NIFA has disbursed 19 awards annually over the past five years at a stable cadence.
