About this award

The Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Virginia State University $8.985 million under the Payments to 1890 Land-Grant Colleges and Tuskegee University formula grant program (CFDA 10.205) on October 1, 2025.

The funding supports Virginia State University's Agricultural Research Station in advancing science-based discovery and innovation that enhance agricultural productivity, profitability, and resilience for all farmers, with particular focus on limited-resource farming communities. Research activities address three critical issue areas: agricultural viability, profitability, and sustainability through data-informed decision-making and optimized integration of livestock and crop enterprises; biotechnology, biomaterials, and bioenergy through gene characterization for environmental stress tolerance and breeding of adaptive crops; and agriculture innovation through transdisciplinary strategies employing artificial intelligence, robotics, and precision agriculture tools. The research portfolio spans multi-livestock production systems including beef cattle, sheep, and small-scale poultry alongside controlled-environment and field-based agricultural systems for sustainable crop, forage, and horticultural production. Research scientists apply data analytics, automation, and precision agriculture tools to improve production efficiency, resource stewardship, and economic performance.

Performance occurs in Petersburg, Virginia, over the period October 1, 2025, through September 30, 2027. As a formula grant, funds are expected to be fully expended in the fiscal year of appropriation, with up to one hundred percent carryover permitted for up to one year after the fiscal year end without prior approval.

Description

Virginia state university's agricultural research station (ARS) advances the land-grant mission through science-based discovery and innovation that enhance the productivity, profitability, and resilience of agriculture for all farmers. Guided by the virginia state university college of agriculture's vision for transdisciplinary integration, ARS applies advanced technologies, sustainable practices, and collaborative research to strengthen the commonwealth's food and agricultural systems while contributing solutions to regional and national challenges. ARS's research portfolio continues to evolve from a traditional emphasis on small ruminants toward a multi-livestock approach that includes beef cattle, sheep, and smallscale poultry production systems. Complementary efforts in both controlled-environment and field-based agricultural systems are expanding opportunities for sustainable crop, forage, and horticultural production. Across these enterprises, ARS scientists employ data analytics, automation, and precision agriculture tools to improve production efficiency, resource stewardship, and economic performance. Aligned with the FY 2026 plan of work, ARS research address ES the following critical issue areas: 1. Agricultural viability, profitability, and sustainability: develop resilient and economically efficient production systems through datainformed decision-making, improved soil and forage management, and optimized integration of livestock and crop enterprises. 2. Biotechnology, biomaterials, and bioenergy: identify and characterize genes that enhance tolerance to environmental stresses such as drought, heat, and metal toxicity; apply genomic and biotechnological tools to breed adapti VE crops; and explore BIO-based and renewable products to strengthen the bioeconomy. 3. Agriculture innovation: employ transdisciplinary strategies to accelerate the discovery, adaptation, and translation of technologies, including artificial intelligence, robotics, and cyber-biosecurity, to address biosecurity threats, improve digital integration, and prepare a technology-enabled agricultural workforce. 4. Natural resources and environment: advance science-based practices that enhance soil health, conserve water resources, and sustain biodiversity while improving the resilience of agricultural ecosystems to extreme weather and environmental pressures. 5. Food, nutrition, and health: enhance food safety, nutrition, and public health through innovations in value-added, functional, and nutraceutical foods derived from animal and plant systems, improving health outcomes and market competitiveness. Through this integrated and forwardfocused research agenda, the VSU agricultural research station is cultivating innovation, sustainability, and scientific leadership - driving a modern, inclusive, and resilient agricultural enterprise for virginia and beyond.
