About this opportunity
Ocean County College is seeking a general contractor to replace the roof of its Planetarium Building, located on the main campus in Ocean County, New Jersey. This construction procurement opportunity focuses on replacing the deteriorating roof of the 8,000 square foot building, which was originally constructed in the 1970s and renovated in 2010. The project requires complete roof system replacement while maintaining building occupancy during construction. The bid opportunity (Bid #25-26 B-1719) is specifically for the Planetarium Dome Roof Replacement and involves a comprehensive roofing system overhaul. The bid documents are available and include detailed specifications, bid drawings, and standard AIA contract documents. Interested contractors must submit sealed bids by February 18, 2026, with the bid opening scheduled for that date. Bidders should carefully review the attached documentation, including the comprehensive bid specifications and architectural drawings, to understand the full scope of work. The project requires contractors to work around an active facility that continues to host public planetarium shows during the renovation.
While no specific set-aside designations or disadvantaged business enterprise requirements are explicitly mentioned in the provided documentation, potential bidders should be qualified general contractors with demonstrated experience in complex roofing projects, particularly for educational or institutional facilities. The project involves replacing a roof on a specialized building with unique architectural features, suggesting that contractors will need specific technical expertise in dome-style roof systems. Though no precise budget range is specified, the complexity of the project and the building's specialized nature indicate a potentially significant investment. The contract will be awarded based on a comprehensive review of submitted bids, with considerations likely including technical competence, proposed methodology, cost, and proven experience with similar institutional construction projects. Contractors will need to demonstrate capability to perform the work with minimal disruption to the ongoing operations of the planetarium and college facilities.
Opportunity text
Originally constructed in the 1970s, and fully renovated in 2010, the Planetarium Building #13 is a one-story, 8,000 square foot building located on the main campus of Ocean County College. The building houses the state-of-the-art projection system inside the domed theater, a multipurpose room, large lobby, gift shop, and administrative spaces. It holds day and evening public showings throughout the weekdays as well as weekends. The current roof is past its useful life and is starting to deteriorate. As such, the College seeks to remedy this issue by replacing the entire roof with a new system. This project will be performed outside of the building which will be occupied at the time of construction.
