About this opportunity

The North Carolina Department of Transportation is requesting Letters of Interest for architectural and engineering design services to relocate the Wake County Maintenance Yard, with submissions due October 19, 2026 at 4:00 p.m. Proposing firms must be properly licensed to practice Architecture, Engineering, or Landscape Architecture in North Carolina, verified through the NC Board of Architecture, NC Board of Examiners for Engineers & Surveyors, or NC Board of Landscape Architects.

The scope encompasses site design and construction documentation for relocating the maintenance yard from its current location at the intersection of Blue Ridge Road and Trinity Road to an undeveloped 72.6-acre partially wooded site on Poole Road that includes a pond. The new facility will serve as the Wake County Maintenance Yard, and the project includes site work and construction of new maintenance facilities.

The total project budget is $60.1 million, funded through Non-General Fund sources and Agency Receipts. Submissions must consist of three copies each of a Letter of Interest not exceeding ten single-sided pages or five double-sided pages, and the current Standard Form 254, formatted on 8.5" × 11" pages and stapled in the upper left-hand corner with no binders or tabs. Physical delivery via FedEx or UPS is available; mail submissions to the NCDOT Facilities Management Unit.

The selection committee will evaluate firms on specialized expertise in project type, past performance on similar projects, adequate staffing, current workload, proposed design approach, experience with project costs and schedules, construction administration capabilities, proximity to the project location, and record of successful project completion. Contact David Varel, NCDOT Facilities Management, at 919-707-4543 or dvarel@ncdot.gov for additional information.
