About this opportunity
University of California, Berkeley is requesting bids on a domestic hot water heat exchanger replacement project in Alameda County under a lump-sum construction contract, with bids due November 2, 2026 at 12:00 p.m. and a mandatory pre-bid conference and site tour on October 21, 2026 at 9:30 a.m. at Barker Hall Loading Dock. Prime contractor eligibility requires attendance at the pre-bid meeting.
The scope includes installation of new HX-16 and CRP-16 heat exchanger units with associated piping, a new domestic hot water mixing valve system station, decommissioning and in-place abandonment of the existing HX-15 with partial demolition of connected low-pressure steam, heat exchanger, chilled water, and condensate return piping, and installation of a new domestic hot water return loop within the mechanical room. Bid Alternate 1 offers an option for the return piping loop to originate from the lower level basement. The existing HX-14 will remain in place.
Bidders must hold a current, active California "B" General Contractor license and submit a Contractor's Special Statement of Experience documenting completion of three to five comparable steam-to-water heat exchanger projects valued at $200,000 or greater within the past five years, all located within the nine Bay Area counties. Bidders must provide owner contact information and project descriptions demonstrating comparability, and list any steam-to-water heat exchanger projects completed or in progress at UC Campuses or National Laboratories within the past five years.
The estimated construction cost is $200,000. The project is subject to prevailing wage requirements under California Labor Code section 1771 and Department of Industrial Relations compliance monitoring. Successful bidders and all subcontractors must be registered with the Department of Industrial Relations and pay no less than the UC Fair Wage of $15 per hour. Bidding documents are available from October 8, 2026 at 4:00 p.m. through BuildingConnected. Original bid bonds must be received within two business days of the deadline at the Capital Projects office. Bid opening occurs at 12:02 p.m. on November 2 via Zoom.
