About this opportunity
The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection is issuing a Notice of Grant Opportunity for lithium-ion battery collection assets and training to support municipalities in establishing drop-off collection locations, with applications due August 31, 2026.
All eligible municipal entities in Massachusetts may apply through a designated Recycling Coordinator; a single application per municipality is required. MassDEP will review applications for eligibility and completeness. The grant program operates in partnership with vendor NLR, Inc., and provides collection materials and employee training at no cost to participating municipalities. Grantees must comply with grant terms and conditions, including mandatory participation in training on proper collection and storage procedures for lithium-ion batteries.
The initiative directly supports MassDEP's Household Hazardous Products Action Plan goal of assisting the public with proper management of household hazardous waste and responds to rising concern over hazards associated with improper collection and disposal of lithium-ion batteries. Additional application materials, guidance documents, and grant requirements are available on MassDEP's Waste & Recycling Grants & Assistance page and the Safely Manage Household Hazardous Products page. Individuals requiring alternative format information or accommodations may contact Melixza Esenyie at 617-626-1282, or access TTY through MassRelay Service at 1-800-439-2370.
