About this file
This is a Notice of Grant Opportunity issued by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) in partnership with vendor NLR, Inc., for the distribution of household hazardous products (HHP) lithium-ion battery collection assets. The grant program aims to support Massachusetts municipalities in establishing accessible lithium-ion battery drop-off collection locations and training municipal employees on proper collection and storage procedures. All eligible municipal entities in the Commonwealth may apply, with applications due by August 31, 2026. Each municipality must submit a single application through its designated Recycling Coordinator. MassDEP will review all applications for eligibility and completeness and notify applicants of the review outcomes. Successful grantees must comply with grant terms and conditions, including participation in training regarding proper collection and storage of lithium-ion batteries.
All collection materials and training are provided at no cost to participating municipalities. The grant program was established in response to growing concerns regarding hazards associated with improper collection and disposal of lithium-ion batteries. The initiative supports MassDEP's broader Household Hazardous Products Action Plan goal of assisting the general public with proper management of household hazardous waste. Additional application materials, guidance documents, and grant requirements are available on MassDEP's website at the Waste & Recycling Grants & Assistance page and the Safely Manage Household Hazardous Products page. Individuals requiring alternative format information or accommodations may contact Melixza Esenyie at 617-626-1282, with TTY access available through MassRelay Service at 1-800-439-2370.
