About this opportunity
The City of Urbana's Community Development Department is seeking to procure a customized 20-foot shipping container specifically designed for live entertainment purposes through a competitive Request for Proposal (RFP) process. The primary deliverable is a fully retrofitted container with a 16-foot wide stage/door opening that can be mechanically lowered via a winch system, with a weatherproof closure mechanism. The container must be classified as an "Assembly Use" under the International Building Code and require design and seal by a licensed Illinois architect or structural engineer. Specific technical requirements include a black marine-grade direct-to-metal paint finish, adjustable stage support legs, 100-amp electrical service, a hard-wired ventilation fan, and a side door. The container will be delivered to 202 W. Green St, Urbana, IL, and installed on a crushed stone or concrete pad within a vacant natural grass lot. Key proposal submission deadlines include a question deadline of June 19, 2024, and a final proposal submission deadline of June 28, 2024, at 5:00 pm. The City's evaluation team will review proposals based on content understanding, vendor qualifications, proposal completeness, work readiness, maintenance capabilities, and overall cost.
The RFP does not explicitly outline specific set-aside designations or restrictions for disadvantaged enterprises. While the document emphasizes compliance with equal employment opportunity provisions, no specific vendor type restrictions are noted. The procurement appears open to qualified vendors capable of meeting the technical specifications and design requirements. No incumbent vendor information is provided, and no specific budget range or award value is explicitly stated in the documentation. The City reserves the right to negotiate final terms with the most suitable respondent and will require selected vendors to maintain appropriate insurance coverage. The container will serve as a mobile performance space for community events, suggesting this is a strategic investment in local cultural infrastructure. Vendors will need to demonstrate technical expertise in container modification, structural engineering, and live entertainment space design to be competitive in this procurement process.
Opportunity text
The City of Urbana is seeking to purchase a new 20' shipping container retrofitted to support live entertainment. The container shall be retrofitted with an 16' wide stage/door opening lowered with a mechanical winch system. When closed, the stage door needs to be weatherproof. The container will be delivered and placed at or near grade on a crushed stone or concrete pad (to be provided by the City) located on a vacant natural grass lot. When lowered, the stage will rest on natural grass. This container will be considered an "Assembly Use" by the International Building Code (IBC) and thus it will need to be designed and sealed by an Illinois architect or structural engineer. See Scope-of-Work section for specifications.
