About this opportunity
The Illinois Department of Transportation is soliciting sealed electronic bids for bridge painting on two structures carrying Interstate 72 over the Kansas City Southern Railroad (SN 069-0035, I-72 Eastbound; SN 069-0036, I-72 Westbound), located 0.5 miles east of Illinois Route 267 in McLean County, with bids due November 6, 2026 at 12:00 p.m. central time via the iCX-Integrated Contractors Exchange system. Bidders must hold current SSPC-QP2 certification for lead abatement and maintain certified status throughout the work—a hard eligibility gate.
The scope encompasses blasting and painting all structural steel on both bridges. Galvanized bearings and structural steel at abutments must be protected from blasting and surface-prepared per the Cleaning and Painting Steel Structures special provision. Final finish coat colors are specified: green (Munsell 7.5G 4/8) for the outside and bottom of fascia beams; gray (Munsell 5B 7/1) for all other surfaces. Containment and disposal of lead paint cleaning residues with air monitoring are mandatory. The contractor must implement a comprehensive full-time on-site Quality Control program during all coating-related operations, submit detailed submittals (contractor qualifications, QC procedures, inspection access plans, surface preparation and painting plans) within 30 days of contract execution, and comply with SSPC, ASTM, and IDOT technical standards including chloride remediation to below 7 micrograms per square centimeter.
Traffic control must maintain at least one lane of I-72 in each direction open to traffic with a minimum 17 feet 7 inches width. Construction is limited to between April 15 and October 31 unless authorized otherwise by the Engineer. Work is funded through the National Highway Performance Program using Federal-aid funds, requiring bidders to certify compliance with Federal and State law. The contract will be awarded to the lowest responsive and responsible bidder. Bids will be publicly opened at 12:00 p.m. on November 6, 2026.
