About this opportunity
The University of New Mexico Continuing Education department is pursuing a sole-source procurement of medical coding and billing training services from the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) for fiscal years 2027–2028, with a 30-day public notice period ending on or around September 10, 2026. This is a sole-source intent subject to New Mexico Procurement law posting and challenge procedures.
UNM Continuing Education proposes to contract with AAPC, located at 2233 S. Presidents Drive, Salt Lake City, Utah, for a Medical Terminology, Anatomy, Pathophysiology, CPC & CPB Certification Bootcamp course and supplementary self-paced medical coding and billing courses. The contract is valued at $150,000 per fiscal year.
UNM justifies sole-source status based on AAPC's proprietary curriculum and unique capabilities: multiple examination attempts, AAPC membership access, Practi-code and Codify software integration for coding practice, and the ability to obtain both Certified Professional Coder (CPC) and Certified Professional Biller (CPB) certifications in a single program. UNM evaluated three competing vendors—Ed2Go, HealthEd Today, and CareerStep—and determined that none met the specification for multiple exams and multiple exam attempts, the critical differentiator.
The requisition was submitted by Sarah Treviso, Program Supervisor, UNM Continuing Education. Per New Mexico Procurement law, the completed sole-source form was posted on the UNM Sunshine Portal and the State of New Mexico Procurement website on August 10, 2026, for a 30-day challenge period. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 7% annual growth in the medical coding and billing field through 2034, supporting the professional development investment.
