About this opportunity

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency seeks innovative early career research proposals through its Young Faculty Award program. Eligible applicants are rising research stars in junior faculty or equivalent positions at academic or nonprofit institutions conducting research in areas including 3D microphysiologic systems, spatially precise microenvironments for localized brain therapy, rapid viral pathogen characterization, and outcome selection through non-traditional receptor modulation. Proposals are due February 22, 2024 and must not exceed page limits for technical, management, and executive summary volumes. Selections will fund fundamental advances to enable transformative defense capabilities and will be evaluated based on technical approach, risks, potential impact, and relevance to DARPA's mission.

Awards under the Young Faculty Award include a 24-month base period with up to $500,000 and a 12-month option period with up to $750,000 for exceptional performers. Research is expected to be conducted at the academic or nonprofit institution of the principal investigator.

Synopsis

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Young Faculty Award (YFA) program aims to identify and engage rising stars in junior research positions in academia and equivalent positions at non-profit research institutions, particularly those without prior DARPA funding, to expose them to Department of Defense (DoD) needs and DARPA's mission to create and prevent technological surprise. The YFA program will provide high-impact funding to elite researchers early in their careers to develop innovative new research that enables transformative DoD capabilities. Ultimately, the YFA program is developing the next generations of researchers focused on national security issues.
