About this opportunity

The Bureau of Reclamation within the Department of the Interior is offering competitive grants for two primary project categories under the WaterSMART Planning and Project Design Grants program: water strategy planning and project design. Eligible applicants include states, tribes, irrigation districts, water districts, and non-profit conservation organizations in western states and territories. Key evaluation criteria include project benefits, stakeholder support, and alignment with federal priorities. The application deadlines are October 17, 2023 and May 23, 2024.

Up to $35 million is available to fund an estimated 60-70 awards of up to $400,000 each, with varying cost-share requirements from 0% to 50% depending on project type. Funding can support activities such as developing water management strategies, conducting project design work, and creating or updating drought contingency plans. The overall program is authorized under the SECURE Water Act, Reclamation States Emergency Drought Relief Act, and other relevant legislation.
