About this opportunity

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is seeking competitive research proposals through the Water Resources Research Act Program National Competitive Grants for Fiscal Year 2025. The program focuses on two primary research priorities: (1) economic valuation of the USGS streamgage network and associated National Water Information System, and (2) model advancement and machine learning integration for hydrologic research. Eligible applicants are Water Resources Research Institutes in the 50 states, District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, and Guam, with investigators from institutions of higher learning able to apply through these institutes. Proposals will be evaluated based on criteria such as addressing research priorities, scientific value, anticipated benefits, and training potential. The application deadline is September 30, 2025, with an anticipated project start date of February 1, 2026.

The funding opportunity will award approximately $1,850,000 across 6 grants, with a maximum award ceiling of $310,000 per grant. Each applicant must match federal dollars with non-federal sources on a 1:1 basis, and the project period is expected to run from February 1, 2026, to January 31, 2029. The research will be conducted at the selected Water Resources Research Institutes, with a focus on advancing hydrologic research methodologies and providing economic insights into water resource management. Successful proposals will demonstrate innovative approaches to understanding water resources, integrating machine learning techniques, and addressing critical water-related challenges across the United States.
