About this opportunity
The Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) is soliciting applications for secondary data analysis research using archived HIV/AIDS datasets and biospecimen collections in maternal, pediatric, and adolescent populations, with application due dates of October 21, 2026; October 20, 2027; and October 19, 2028. R21 exploratory/developmental research grants are the sole mechanism; clinical trials are not allowed.
Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public and private), nonprofits (501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3)), for-profit organizations, state and local governments, tribal governments (federally recognized and not federally recognized), special district governments, and foreign organizations. Foreign subawards are not permitted; non-domestic components of U.S. organizations are eligible.
Direct costs are capped at $275,000 over two years, with a maximum of $200,000 direct costs in any single year. NICHD and the National Institute of Mental Health intend to commit $1,000,000 in FY 2027 to fund 2–3 awards.
The two-year project period begins as early as October 21, 2026. Work involves secondary analyses of existing archived HIV/AIDS datasets and specimen collections to address epidemiology, pathogenesis, treatment, clinical manifestations, and HIV-associated co-infections and co-morbidities.
Applications must integrate innovative data science methods, existing research infrastructure, and interdisciplinary perspectives. Priority areas include implementation science outcomes evaluation, HIV reservoir characterization, and treatment response markers. All applications must include a Data Management and Sharing Plan, letters of support from data custodians or collaborators, and resource sharing plans. Applicants must register with SAM, eRA Commons, Grants.gov, and ORCID (all PDs/PIs) prior to submission. Review emphasizes significance, innovation, rigor, feasibility, and investigator expertise.
The opportunity is assigned to CFDA 93.865 (Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research) and CFDA 93.242 (Mental Health Research Grants).
Synopsis
