About this opportunity
The U.S. Consulate Almaty in Kazakhstan is seeking proposals for the "U.S. Expert Consultations for Newsrooms" grant opportunity under the AEECA/ESF PD Programs (CFDA 19.900). The program aims to strengthen Kazakh newsrooms by equipping media professionals with skills, tools, and strategies through U.S. expert-led workshops, enhancing content quality, audience engagement, and sustainability. Eligible applicants include U.S. and Kazakh non-profit organizations, educational institutions, and for-profit organizations with media development experience. Applications will be evaluated on their ability to meet objectives such as training at least 50 journalists in advanced storytelling techniques, increasing online engagement rates, helping five media outlets adopt sustainable revenue models, and equipping ten staff members across four radio newsrooms with digital archiving skills. Proposals are due by March 14, 2025.
The grant program has a total available funding of $145,000, with individual awards ranging from $50,000 to $145,000 for projects lasting 12-18 months. The performance period is expected to start on October 1, 2025 and take place in Kazakhstan, targeting mid-career journalists, editors, producers, young journalists, and technical staff in traditional, digital-native, and hybrid newsrooms.
Synopsis
Kazakhstan's media sector is navigating an important phase of growth and modernization as it adapts to global changes in technology, storytelling, and audience engagement. While local media outlets have made progress, many continue to face challenges in fully adopting innovative tools and practices needed to meet the expectations of a growing digital audience. As news consumption increasingly shifts from traditional platforms to digital, social, and mobile-based media, the demand for modern, high-quality journalism has never been greater.
To remain competitive and relevant, newsrooms-whether traditional, digital-native, hybrid, or radio-based-require expertise in areas such as immersive journalism, advanced storytelling techniques, data-driven decision-making, and audience engagement strategies. For radio newsrooms in particular, digital archiving solutions are essential for enhancing accessibility and expanding reach. Embracing digital tools and strategies is crucial for expanding outlets' reach and impact in a rapidly evolving media landscape.
The U.S. Mission has a history of supporting initiatives aimed at improving media professionalism, ethics, and digital capabilities. Previous programs, which included workshops on video storytelling and social media engagement, resulted in measurable audience growth and improved reporting practices. Lessons learned from these efforts indicate the importance of tailored, hands-on training and ongoing mentorship to address outlet-specific needs. Additionally, a focus on sustainability, including diversified revenue models, is critical to supporting the long-term success of media organizations.
Project Audience(s): Mid-career journalists, editors, and producers (ages 25-45) of all genders from traditional, digital-native, and hybrid newsrooms, young journalists and recent graduates (ages 20-30) in urban and regional centers, technical staff in radio newsrooms across Kazakhstan.
Project Goal: To strengthen Kazakh newsrooms by equipping media professionals with skills, tools, and strategies through U.S. expert-led workshops, enhancing content quality, audience engagement, and sustainability.
