About this opportunity

The National Institutes of Health, through its Common Fund in partnership with other NIH Institutes and Centers, is forecasting a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) for the RNomics transformative technologies initiative, which will support development of experimental and computational tools for characterizing and analyzing the complete set of RNA molecules (RNome) in cells and tissues; applications are not currently being solicited, and no hard deadline is specified in this forecast notice.

Eligible applicants include 501(c)(3) nonprofits, higher education institutions (public and private), small businesses, state and local governments, tribal governments (federally recognized and non-federally recognized), Indian/Native American tribal governments, federal agencies, U.S. territories and possessions, faith-based and community-based organizations, regional organizations, and non-domestic entities.

The program will fund phased projects developing high-risk, early-stage RNA technologies not yet demonstrated at scale or in biologically relevant systems. Priority areas encompass tools to sequence RNA, detect modifications, study RNA function, and analyze RNA across molecules, cells, and tissues. Projects successfully completing Phase 1 milestones will be evaluated for transition to Phase 2, with Phase 2 expected to deliver validated tools for community use. The funding instrument is a cooperative agreement. The program operates under CFDA 93.310 (Trans-NIH Research Support). Scientific merit review will assess significance, approach, innovation, investigator competency, resource adequacy, budget appropriateness, and (where applicable) protections against adverse effects. Awards are generally subject to OMB 2 CFR 200 audit requirements as implemented by 45 CFR 75.

Forecast synopsis

The NIH Common Fund, in partnership with other NIH Institutes and Centers, plans to issue Notices of Funding Opportunity (NOFOs) for the RNomics program, which seeks to develop tools for studying the full set of RNA molecules (the RNome) in cells and tissues. The program will support technologies and resources that enable integrated analysis of RNA sequences, modifications, structures, locations, interactions, and functions to advance understanding of health and disease. RNomics includes four initiatives: technology enhancement centers, transformative technologies, molecular standards, and a coordinating center. Applications are not being solicited at this time. This notice is being provided to give potential applicants time to develop meaningful collaborations and strong projects.

This NOFO will support the transformative technologies initiative. These phased projects will develop new experimental and computational RNA technologies that address major limitations of current methods. Projects will focus on early-stage, high-risk ideas not yet demonstrated at scale or in biologically relevant systems. Priority areas include tools to sequence RNA, detect modifications, study RNA function, and analyze RNA across molecules, cells, and tissues. Projects that successfully complete Phase 1 milestones will be evaluated for transition to Phase 2. Phase 2 projects are expected to deliver validated tools for community use.
