About this opportunity
The U.S. Department of State's Public Diplomacy Section at the U.S. Mission to Germany is seeking innovative public diplomacy initiatives that strengthen U.S.-German relations and highlight the enduring partnership between the two nations, particularly in commemoration of the United States' 250th anniversary (Freedom 250). Eligible applicants include registered nonprofits, think tanks, nongovernmental organizations, educational institutions, governmental entities, and individuals with a presence in Germany; for-profit entities are ineligible. Proposals must address key focus areas including sports diplomacy, science and technology collaboration, countering anti-Semitism, supporting freedom of speech, and measuring the long-term impact of exchange programs, with all projects requiring strong U.S. components, clearly defined German target audiences, and robust monitoring and evaluation plans. Applications will be evaluated on quality and feasibility (30 points), organizational capacity (25 points), project planning (20 points), budget (10 points), monitoring and evaluation (10 points), and sustainability (5 points). The application deadline is June 1, 2026, with notifications of review results expected within 120 days of the deadline.
The program anticipates awarding 2-6 grants ranging from $5,000 to $50,000, with project performance periods not exceeding 24 months and programs starting between July 30 and September 30, 2026. Applicants should allow 10-12 weeks between submission and proposed project start dates for award processing and administrative requirements, including SAM.gov registration and UEI acquisition. Programs must primarily benefit and take place in Germany, with limited activities in the United States or third countries permissible only if clearly justified and directly supporting program impact in Germany. Awardees must submit mandatory federal forms, an 8-page proposal, detailed line-item budgets with narrative justification, and supporting documentation including personnel resumes and partner support letters.
