About this opportunity

The National Cancer Institute is soliciting applications for the Worta McCaskill-Stevens Career Development Award for Community Oncology and Prevention Research (K12 Clinical Trial Optional), with applications due February 18, 2027. This institutional career development award funds newly trained clinicians pursuing independent research careers in community oncology or cancer prevention, designed to prepare scholars for transition to advanced funding mechanisms (K08, R03, R21, R01).

Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public and private), 501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3) nonprofits, faith-based and community-based organizations, HBCUs, Hispanic-serving institutions, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions, Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institutions, tribally controlled colleges and universities, Indian/Native American tribal governments, regional organizations, state governments, county governments, city/township governments, special district governments, public or Indian housing authorities, independent school districts, and for-profit organizations. Non-domestic entities and foreign organizations are ineligible; foreign components of U.S. organizations are allowed.

Scholars may serve as lead investigators of independent community-based clinical trials, propose ancillary studies to existing prevention, screening, or control clinical trials, gain research experience in community-based clinical trials led by other investigators, or lead innovative clinical trial approaches that expand engagement of a wide variety of communities in cancer clinical research. The program places special emphasis on training clinical scientists whose career goals address the needs of underserved or underrepresented communities for access to clinical care and participation in cancer clinical research.

Applications are evaluated on scientific and technical merit, investigator competency, adequacy of facilities and resources, budget necessity, and relevance to program objectives. The program operates under CFDA 93.398 (Cancer Research Manpower) and 93.399 (Cancer Control). K12 awards support up to five years of trainee funding (years 2-7).
