About this opportunity

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), a division of the Department of Health and Human Services, seeks research proposals for systems-based approaches to improve patient safety by enhancing healthcare worker safety and well-being. Applicants must develop and test innovative, system-level interventions that address healthcare worker burnout, resilience, and safety culture while demonstrating how these improvements contribute to overall patient safety outcomes. The funding opportunity prioritizes research that incorporates fresh perspectives from healthcare professionals and generates new evidence-based strategies for mitigating workplace hazards and improving organizational safety culture. Eligible applicants include government agencies, tribal governments, institutions of higher education, nonprofit organizations, small businesses, and for-profit organizations. Applications will be evaluated based on scientific and technical merit, including the qualifications of the principal investigator and staff, appropriate research methodology, and relevance to AHRQ's patient safety priorities, with the final deadline for submission set for March 25, 2026.

Funded projects typically receive award values ranging from approximately $300,000 to $1,200,000 for standard project grants, with cooperative agreements for larger coordinating initiatives reaching up to $4,000,000 over five-year periods. Project periods generally span four to five years, allowing for comprehensive research development and implementation across diverse healthcare delivery settings including hospitals, ambulatory care practices, long-term care facilities, and transitions between care settings. Research may be conducted nationwide across any healthcare delivery system or healthcare organization willing to participate in the study, with no geographic restrictions limiting where performance activities occur.

Synopsis

The purpose of this Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) is to advance system-level approaches to improve patient safety by improving healthcare worker safety and well-being. Patient safety cannot be fully achieved without healthcare worker safety and well-being. This NOFO will contribute to AHRQs goal of reinvigorating the patient safety movement by adding fresh perspectives and insights of healthcare professionals to efforts to improve patient safety.
