About this opportunity

The National Institute of Food and Agriculture is soliciting applications for the Sun Grant Program to fund a single five-year consortium award with $2.801 million in anticipated Fiscal Year 2026 funding, with applications due August 17, 2026. Eligibility is restricted to consortia of 1862, 1890, and 1994 Land-grant Institutions with one entity from each of the five regional Sun Grant regions (North Central, Northeastern, Southeastern, South Central, Western) and the Western Insular Pacific Subcenter.

The award supports regional Sun Grant Centers and the Western Insular Pacific Subcenter in developing, distributing, and implementing biobased energy technologies while promoting diverse agricultural production systems and rural economic growth. Each Center and Subcenter must allocate 75 percent of funds to competitive regional grant programs supporting multi-institutional, multistate research, extension, and education initiatives, with minimum allocations of 30 percent for technology development and 30 percent for technology implementation. Up to four percent of funds may cover administrative expenses for the competitive grant program. Subgrants require 20 percent matching funds from non-Federal sources, except for fundamental research.

Applicants must demonstrate experience managing competitive grant programs, provide data management plans, outline clear communication strategies, and explain collaboration plans among consortium institutions. Evaluation criteria weight demonstrated grant management experience at 25 percent; alignment with Sun Grant Program goals, understanding of regional biomass and bioenergy impacts, communication quality, consortium collaboration plans, and data management plan quality each at 15 percent.

The program operates under CFDA 10.320. Project periods range from 24 to 36 months and may not exceed five years including no-cost extensions.
