About this program
The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awards Project Grants under the Sun Grant Program (Assistance Listing 10.320) to support regional bioenergy, bioproducts, and biofuels research, education, and extension activities, with the most recent award disbursed on September 30, 2025.
The program funds multistate, multi-institutional research, extension, and education programs focused on agricultural and forest-based biofuels, bioproducts, biopower, and alternative transportation fuels (ground and air), with the objective of advancing a national bioeconomy and enhancing rural economic development. Grant recipients must use 75 percent of funds to provide competitive subgrants within five biogeographical regions: North Central, Southeastern, South Central, Western, and a Western Insular Pacific subcenter. Eligible applicants are limited to the designated Sun Grant Centers and Subcenter specified in 7 U.S.C. 8114, which are consortia of land-grant universities (1862, 1890, and 1994 institutions).
Grant activity is episodic. The program has issued 40 awards since 2010, with concentrations in 2013 and 2014 (8 and 5 awards respectively) and single awards in 2019, 2020, and 2025. Combined federal obligation across all awards totals $42.8 million, with a combined federal and non-federal obligation of $44.7 million, reflecting modest cost-share contributions from recipients. Award magnitudes vary widely: recent mega-awards include $16.3 million (September 2020) and $2.8 million (September 2025); earlier awards from 2010–2013 ranged from approximately $421 thousand to $432 thousand, with some adjustments recorded as negative obligations.
All 40 awards in the portfolio are Project Grants. Funding is concentrated entirely within NIFA.
A grant opportunity posted on July 31, 2026, with a due date of August 17, 2026, solicits applications from the designated consortium institutions to advance biobased energy technologies, support rural economic growth, and enhance coordination among USDA, other federal agencies, and land-grant institutions. Project periods do not exceed five years including no-cost extensions. Contact the National Program Leader for specific deadline dates and approval timelines; current opportunities are available at https://nifa.usda.gov/funding-opportunity/sun-grant-program.
